Dernakesh National School re-opened its doors on Wednesday 30th August 2017 for what we hope will be another exciting, action packed year of fun and learning together. We especially welcome our new class of Junior Infants. We hope they soon discover that our school is one big happy family, just like their own at home. We are certain that they will settle in quickly and that 'school' will become their 'home from home'! Good luck to all our pupils and teachers as we embark on our school's 181st year serving the parish of Drumgoon.

We are delighted to welcome all our pupils back to school for another busy year at Dernakesh. Our school is now 181 years old! We especially welcome the Junior Infant class of 2017! We know that they will soon feel at home here because we are blessed with wonderful pupils and parents who all strive to make our school the best it can be. Thank you and good luck to you all!

Bronze winners for 3, 4 or 5 days absence

 Graduaton Class 2017!

A Graduation Ceremony for the children of 6th class has been held in our school for over 20 years! On Wednesday 21st June the graduation class enjoyed a lovely evening with a mass, presentation of certificates and light refreshments. It was a warm gathering of pupils, parents, family, B.O.M. members and teachers. We wish our sixth class the best of success, health and happiness in their new school in September. We are sincerely grateful that the children received yet another beautiful cake from the Parents’ Association.

 Parents' Association Sponsored Walk

Over 120 parents, pupils, teachers and friends participated in our annual walk recently. We enjoyed great fun and exercise outside on a lovely evening. The weather held out until we returned to school for a welcome cup of tea and a biscuit. Míle buíochas arís to our wonderfully supportive Parents’ Association for their hard work in organising and marshalling the walk as well as providing the refreshments in school. Thank you all so much!

 School Summer Leagues!

This year, more than any other in recent memory, we have been blessed with amazing weather for our school summer leagues. This is an 8 round competition that involves every child from 2nd class to 6th competing in heats and semi-finals over four weeks. This all led up to Tuesday’s programme of final matches. All children competed to a high standard in volleyball, rounders, athletics and Gaelic football. A fantastic day was had by all the children and we certainly showed that sport is all about FUN! FUN! FUN!

 School Tours 2017!

Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class visited GR8 in Castleblaney and had a wonderful time.

Mr Foster’s class spent the day in Tayto Park. They enjoyed a guided tour of the animal sanctuary and the factory before being let loose with a stamp on their hand that allowed them free access to all the rides in the park. Even the rain couldn’t dampen their high spirits and every ride was tested out!

Mrs Lee’s and Mr McCaffrey’s classes went for a day of outdoor adventure to Carlingford Adventure Centre. Much fun and excitement was had both high in the air and in the water! The children learned how to climb and zip wire in the Sky Park. They also took to the water by pier jumping.

On Monday of this week Mr McCaffrey and his class took a walking tour to Drumgoon Graveyard. They were delighted to be joined there by a local historian, none other than our own school principal, Aogán Ó Fearghail. The weather was fabulous and the children were delighted to learn about their ancestors who are buried there. Míle buíochas to Aogán for taking the time out of his very busy schedule to ensure that the children had a most informative presentation.

We take great pride in mentioning the very many complimentary comments made by tour guides and the general public when the children of Dernakesh are on tour. People remark on how well mannered, polite and respectful the children are as well as how friendly and supportive they are of each other. This is a huge validation that our school’s ethos is living and thriving in all children wherever they may go. It is also a great compliment to you, their parents, that the respect you have instilled in your children is valued and promoted by the children themselves. Thank you!

 'Everyone's a Winnner!'

Congratulations Euan! Well done to Euan on competing in football trials and being selected to represent Cavan and Monaghan schools in the half-time mini-games of the Ulster Senior Football Championship. We know you’ll be amazing. Euan is pictured being presented with his medal by our very own Principal and Uachtaran Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Aogán O’Fearghail in Breffni Park.

We also congratulate Hannah Morris who has been selected to referee one of the mini-games during the half-time of the All Ireland Football Semi-Finals in Croke Park on Sunday 27th August. We wish her the very best of luck – no better person for the job Hannah! Well done!

Relay Races in Clones: On the 7th June, Doire Na Ceise relay teams travelled to the running track in Clones for the Cavan County Relay finals. Teams of junior boys, junior girls, senior boys and senior girls represented our school.

We congratulate the junior girls’ team who placed third in the finals. We thank all team members who each participated very well with enthusiasm and true sportsmanship.

Hurling:-The boys of 5th and 6th class took part in the Cumann na mBunscoil hurling tournament and reached the finals in Breffni Park. They received great support from families and friends and although they were runners up a great speech by team captain Oisín Pepper lifted everyone’s spirits and we all left in an upbeat mood. Well done lads and thanks Oisín for your ‘inspirational’ speech!

The children also took part in other Cumann na mBunscoile tournaments for football and camogie. Despite not progressing to the finals the level of competition was extremely high and all represented the school with their usual flair, enthusiasm and excellent sportsmanship.

Community Games Art Competition: Once again a great number of children took part in the Community Games Art Competition in St. Aidan's School. They each represented our school very well. We are pleased and proud to announce that we had seven winners from our school. We had three gold medal winners, Grace Geoghegan, Mia Brennan and Ben Brennan. Róisín Bannon won a silver medal and Caoimhe O’Brien, Rose Geoghegan and Sarah Lee each won a bronze medal. Well done to you all! We wish those going forward to the County Competition the very best of luck! We also express our sincere gratitude once again to Mairéad Ward who came in especially to present the children with their awards - on her day off! Go raibh míle maith agat Mairéad!

Community Games Athletics: Many children also took part in the Community Games Athletics competitions. Once again our pupils achieved great success across the range of activities which included sprints, distance runs and ball throwing.

Grace Geoghegan, Ciarán Clerkin, Sarah Reynolds, Mairéad Markey, Rose Geoghegan, Eva O’Grady and Orlaith Markey each won gold medals in their events.

Silver medals were won by Lucy Morris, Mairéad Markey, Rose Geoghegan, Hannah Morris, Orlaith Markey and Eva O’Grady. Bronze medal winners were Lucy Morris, Emma Carroll, Sarah Reynolds and Mairéad Markey.

We congratulate all children who took part and we thank all parents for the support they give to the children by encouraging them to take part.

 First Holy Communion 2017

Congratulations to the children of Second Class who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday 27th May. You certainly worked very hard preparing for your big day and the ceremony was a huge success thanks to your cool, calm and collected attitude! We owe a deep gratitude to lots of people, to Fr. Michael who worked so kindly and patiently with us, to the choir and musicians who enhanced our ceremony, to our parents for your love and support and finally to our Parents' Association, and all parents who came to help, for providing the communion cake and refreshments in the school. Míle buíochas go léir!

Míle buíochas do Dhroim Dhúin Éire Óg!

We would like to express how grateful we are to Droim Dhúin Éire Óg for their kind donation of new balls for football training in school. Rest assured they will be put to very good use over the remaining weeks of the school term.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh a chairde!

 Received with Grateful Thanks!

We were delighted to receive a visit on Tuesday from David Cosgrove and Sandra Sherlock of ‘Cootehill Community Transformation Committee’ who came to school to present us with a cheque for €300 towards school funds. This generous donation will be spent on extending the range of P.E. equipment in the school.

The committee are a voluntary group who share the belief that as a community we can get together and exercise in a fun way. They run a six week programme which is open to people of all fitness levels – and none! It costs €50.00 and includes an induction night which comprises of a weigh in, fitness test and introduction to the programme.

Members can choose to participate in any or all of the following: circuits, ‘Couch to 5Km’, Zumba, Boxercise, Yoga, family fun fitness, happy feet walking and Parkrun. Perhaps you might be interested in joining them for next year’s programme – they always love to have new people on board.

Many thanks to David, Sandra and colleagues for their kind
consideration of our school. We wish them every success in the future!

 Sixth Class Irish Aid Project

*A BETTER LIFE FOR EVERONE*

Over the past few weeks the 6th class have been working on Our World, in cooperation with Irish Aid. We have learned about hunger, poverty, climate change, endangered animals and education rights. It is a lot worse than we thought. We are doing this to inform people how bad things are in and out of this country. We have made a poster with lots of facts and we are very proud of the outcome of our work!!

Something Fishy Going on at Dernakesh!

On Wednesday 29th March we were delighted to welcome members of the Fisheries Board to our school. Children in all classes were able to view live specimens of fresh water fish and other water dwelling creatures. They were able to observe them closely using microscopes and magnifying glasses. There were experts on hand to answer any questions the children had and, as you might expect, there was no shortage of questions. The experts were delighted by the interest shown by the children and impressed by their level of understanding and the in depth questions they asked. Children in 4th, 5th and 6th Class also received an hour long presentation on the wide range of plants and creatures living in, on and around our lakes and rivers. The key message was our responsibility to care for these environments by reducing litter and pollution and by protecting the habitats of our treasured wildlife.

 National Spring Clean 2017

Comhghairdeas agus míle buíochas do Rang a Sé!
Congratulations and thank you to sixth class who undertook a spring clean of our outdoor garden and the road along the fromt of the school. Much hard work was undertaken with good humour and unfaulting dedication to picking up every last scrap of litter! A great time was had by all and the weather was certainly onour side. The only disappointment of the day was the large amount of litter collected along the roadside but, as a result of your hard work, our school grounds now reflect the great respect and care we have for our environment.

 Confirmation 2017

We congratulate the children of 6th class who made their Confirmation last Sunday (26th March) in St. Michael's Church, Cootehill. We also commend them for their mature and confident performance on the day and for their sensible, mature attitude throughout preparations for this very important sacrament. We wish them well and offer our continued support and encouragement as they travel along on their faith journey.

We are extremely grateful to Fr. Michael and Fr. Paul for their guidance and support throughout the year.We also wish to thank Bishop Leo for the wonderful service we enjoyed. Finally, a huge thank you to our fantastic Parents' Association for their gift of this wonderful, delicious Confirmation cake. Míle buíochas go léir!

Bhí céilí mór againn chun ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig sa halla inniu. Bhí páistí ó gach rang ag damhsa rincí trádisiúnta, ag seinm ceol trádisiúnta, ag canadh amhráin trádisiúnta, ag déanamh drámaíocht as Gaeilge agus ag léamh filíocht as Gaeilge freisin. Bhain taitneamh le gach duine as an craic agus and spraoi.  Dernakesh Quiz Teams

Our 5th and 6th class quiz teams have been in action many times over the last few weeks as they attended the Credit Union Quiz, The Cumann na mBunscoil Quiz and, of course, our very own quiz organised by our dedicated Parents' Association. The evening was a great success with many of the local schools being represented. Thanks to all involved in planning and running the quiz. We are already looking forward to next years' quiz!

World Book Day 2017

This year World Book Day celebrated its 20th Birthday! We all dressed up as our favourite characters from stories and poems. We spent an enjoyable time sharing our favourite authors, books and poetry with our classmates. We read excerpts aloud, we dramatised short sketches and we completed book reviews. Don't forget to have fun spending your voucher on books to further stimulate your imagination and satisfy your curiosity!

 Ash Wednesday Assembly

Father Michael joined us on Wednesday 1st March to celebrate our Ash Wednesday Assembly and to distribute ashes. We all made promises to give up something we love or to do more to help others during Lent. Fr Michael told us that these promises are a challenge so that we begin to empathise with people living in our world for whom every day is a challenge - not for the things they want but just to get basic needs like food, water and shelter. He suggested that the money we save by not buying treats could be given to Trocaire or another charity that supports the poor and needy in our world.

I.N.T.O President Rosena Jordan Visits Our School

We were delighted to welcome Rosena Jordan, the President of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation, to our school on Tuesday 28th February. Rosena, originally from County Mayo, now lives in Kingscourt and teaches in Virginia. She is coming towards the end of her term of office and is visiting all schools in County Cavan. She was overwhelmed by the interest all children showed in her role as President and she was very impressed with the polite way in which pupils asked intelligent and searching questions. We wish Rosena the very best of success and happiness in the new role she takes on after her Presidency.

 Donations Towards Our School Library

The Pupils and Staff would like to express our deepest gratitude to Gallonray House and our Parents' Association for their recent generous donations towards the restocking of our school library. Your kindness will go a long way towards ensuring the books available to our children are as modern and engaging as they can be. Reading is not only an essential skill in the modern technological age but is still a delightful activity that can take young minds on journeys of discovery and enchantment. We will still be delighted to accept donations of any books your children have now out-grown at home. Thank you!

 Catholic Schools Week 2017 Assembly

We were joined by Father Michael on Friday 3rd February to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. The theme for this year was 'Laudato Si', The Pope's message to the world asking us to take greater responsibility for the care of the earth which is our common shared home. This includes taking better care of the poor and needy in every corner of the world both at home and abroad. We celebrated the life of St. Brigid who spent her whole life doing just this. We also remebered St. Blasise and all children had their throats blessed. We thank Fr Michael for taking the time out of his busy day to celebrate with us.

 10@10

On Friday 10th February at 10 am children in all classes joined thousands of others across the country by taking part in ten minutes of gentle excercise. This was a nationwide initiative by RTE's Operation Transformation team who are encouraging all of us to find 10 minutes for exercise each day in order to promote physical and mental wellbeing.

Cumann na mBunscoil Handball Championship 2017

On the Wednesday 25th of January we went to the handball in St Pat’s, Cavan. Nineteen people went on the bus from the school. The handball began at around ten o’clock on Wednesday morning. The first to play was Eva o’Grady. Oisin Pepper and Mathew Mc Dermott won their first match. When the singles’ matches ended the doubles’ began. Ben Brennan and Darren Clarke unfortunately lost their match as did Orlaith Markey and Laura Fox. At half time we had a lunch break and most people went outside. Mr Mc Caffrey gave us tips before our matches began. Your serve had to go quite far to get past the line and if it didn’t go past the line it didn’t count so you had to hit it really hard. Most of the people who were competing already go to handball clubs and they were really good. We were also good considering our playing experience. Sarah Jane Ahearne was automatically through to the semi finals but sadly lost her match. Abbie Whelan and Hollyann Coughlan made it through to the finals and were the last to play but unfortunately they also lost their match. Paul Brady, former handball World Champion was there and he kindly gave some of us a few tips on how to improve our game. We left at around half past two and were back at the school at half past three. It was a great day out enjoyed by all. We thank Mr McCaffrey for his hard work in preparing us for the competition.

Team Hope Shoe Box Appeal 2016

Sincere thanks to all families and friends of Dernakesh who generously supported our shoebox appeal. On Monday we sent off 94 shoe boxes filled with treats and surprises to the poor children of our world who, for many reasons, will not enjoy the same happy Christmas that we are used to. Becauase of your kindness many of these children will receive a box full of happiness and love that not only makes them smile but also lets them know that someone, somewhere is thinking of them.

May you each enjoy the peaceful and merry Christmas you so richly deserve.

 Comhghairdeas Droim Dhúin Éire Óg!

 Happy Hallowe'en!

Many thanks and well done to all our spookily 'fangtastic' friends who came to school in Hallowe'en costume. There were some very creative ideas and we all had lots of fun. Thanks also to Fr. Michael who led us in our assembly on the celebrations of All Saints and All Souls. Finally, thanks to all parents, pupils and teachers for a happy, hardworking start to the new school year. We hope you all enjoy an exciting Hallowe'en break.

 Be Safe Be Seen!

While we are on holiday for Hallowe'en the clocks will be go back. This makes the evenings much darker much earlier. We need to keep ourselves safe when we are out and about in the dark. Thanks to the Road Safety Authority the children from Junior Infants through to Third Class have been learning all about safety on the roads. Miss Smiths class each reveived a hi-vis jacket. Ms O'Reilly's class became 'Seat-Belt Sheriffs' who will check that everyone always wears their belt on the bus and in the car. Second Class talked about the importance of being seen on the road at night by wearing hi-vis armbands. Third Class reminded each other of the 'Safe Cross Code' by singing and dancing to the song.Well done everyone and remember to bring home this safety message to your family - 'Be Safe- Be Seen'

 Celebrating Roald Dahl's 100th Birthday!

Well done to all the boys and girls who came to school dressed as characters from their favourite Roald Dahl stories. We had great fun sharing our love of all things Roald Dahl from his Revolting Rhymes to his last ever book 'Esio Trot'. We enjoyed reading aloud our favourite passages as well as dramatising our favourite scenes.

Breithlá sona duit a Roald. Is breá linn tú féin agus do leabhair iontach!
